Review of the Conference-Ddiscussion on Pharmacogenomics and its Applications, organised by the UFR SPB of the Université FHB and the YTO Foundation

On Friday December 15 2023, the Pharmaceutical and Biological Sciences Training and Research Unit (UFR SPB) of the Félix Houphouët-Boigny University, in partnership with the YTO Foundation, organized a unique conference-discussion on the topic of Pharmacogenomics and its Applications. The event was held on the UFHB campus in Cocody and brought together 40 health specialists.

Collaborating for science and innovation

Pharmacogenomics, a fast-growing discipline, is at the heart of current biomedical discussions. By joining forces with the YTO Foundation, UFR SPB is shedding light on a field that is revolutionizing medicine. This collaboration testifies to the commitment of both organizations to enhancing scientific research and building capacity in molecular genetics and genomics.

Why is pharmacogenomics so important?

This discipline focuses on the study of how an individual's genes influence his or her response to drugs. Thanks to pharmacogenomics, it is now possible to personalize medical care according to a patient's genetic unique characteristics, paving the way for precision medicine. Pharmacogenomics not only improves treatment efficacy, but also reduces side effects. It is therefore an indispensable tool for pharmacists, doctors and researchers in the healthcare field.

A distinguished speaker: Dr. David Téa Okou

The speaker was Dr. David Téa Okou, clinical molecular geneticist and expert in complex diseases. As an adjunct Professor at Emory University in Atlanta and the Vice-President of the YTO Foundation, Dr. Okou is a pioneer of human genetic research in Côte d'Ivoire, where he works at the Institut National de Santé Publique in Adjamé. His expertise allowed participants to better understand the applications of pharmacogenomics, and his speech was illustrated by examples drawn from current cases.

An opportunity for professionals in the field

Targeting a wide professional audience (pharmacists, doctors and researchers), this event was a valuable opportunity for these players to learn about the latest scientific advances in the field of genetics applied to pharmacology. The conference-discussion brought together more than 40 specialists, both face-to-face and online. Dr. Téa Okou presented the current state of pharmacogenomics and its application frameworks through practical case studies. An interactive question-and-answer session provided an opportunity for further discussion, marking a highlight for the professionals in attendance.

Upcoming activities to promote precision medicine in Côte d'Ivoire

The YTO Foundation and UFR SPB will continue to promote educational and scientific events on this scale. Stay tuned for upcoming activities and join the precision medicine revolution in Côte d'Ivoire.
