The Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny organized a "training of trainers" workshop for 40 researchers, focusing on improving their skills in grant writing to compete for research funding. This initiative was part of capacity building efforts for researchers in areas that are critical for the scientific and academic development in Côte d'Ivoire.
Capacity-building for 40 trainers at the Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny
The training session was led by Professor David Okou, a clinical molecular geneticist and adjunct research faculty in the Department of Pediatrics at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Professor Okou, who is also in charge of genetic research into non-communicable diseases at the "Institut National de Santé Publique" in Adjamé, shared his expertise on effective strategies for developing and presenting research proposals likely to attract international funding.
Equip researchers with the tools they need to secure funding
The main objective of this training course was to equip participants with the necessary tools to :
- Understand the funding mechanisms available nationally and internationally.
- Put together clear, convincing proposals that meet specific grant agency criteria.
- Articulate the importance and potential impact of their research to maximize the likelyhood of obtaining funding.
An interactive and hands-on approach
Professor Téa Okou used an interactive and hands-on approach to engage participants, by combining theoretical presentations with practical cases. The courses covered various aspects of grant writing, including defining objectives, research methodology, and creating a detailed budget. Case study of wining proposals were also discussed to illustrate best practice in this field.
In terms of impact, the workshop aimed to create a domino effect where the knowledge acquired will be disseminated throughout the academic community of the Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny and beyond. This is essential for increasing the autonomy of Ivorian research scientists and their ability to compete effectively for international research funding.
Enhancing research capabilities in Côte d'Ivoire
This initiative is an important step towards increasing research capacity in Côte d'Ivoire, to enable researchers to conduct innovative and relevant studies that can significantly contribute to the well-being of the population. By equipping researchers with the tools they need to globaly compete for research funding, the Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny and its partners are reinforcing Côte d'Ivoire's role as a key player in global science.
